More Editor Seats (e.g. Web Editor) are usually required in early phases of the publishing process, whereas more K4 Layout Seats are required in later phases. Whereas earmarked licenses can only be used for a specific client type, the Universal Seat can be used as needed. This means that for earmarked licenses, such as the K4 Layout License and the K4 Content Portal License, only the specific K4 functions are activated for the user. For example, a K4 Edit or K4 Layout license activates functions within Adobe InDesign and InCopy for the user. However, Universal licenses can be used flexibly for all client types. K4 functions are activated per user and the user can log on to any client with them. In this way, the Universal Seat creates agile workflows and allows freedom in the use of editors and layouters depending on the status of the publication. Both, layouters and editors, can use Universal Seats depending on the need for specific skills. So at no time too few Seats of a kind will be available. Like many others, we were there from September 5th to 6th to exchange ideas with colleagues and to attend discussions about a constantly evolving industry.</p> <p>Michelle Garrett of <a href="https://www.meltwater.com">Meltwater</a> was able to ask some of the specialists about their conclusions and we have compiled some answers here as they give a good summary of the event.</p> <p><strong>$$$$$</strong></p> <p>“It is becoming increasingly important that public relations and content marketing teams work proactively together to achieve the greatest impact”, says Dominic Garcia, Senior Director of Content Marketing, Druva.</p> <p>“One example is research where the full potential of the project can only be realized if you have an integrated plan. It also extends to the brand – assuming that all content is a representation of the brand, you begin to realize that everything a content team produces should meet the same standards of quality and messaging as PR activities.”</p> <p>“One of the biggest challenges with content is how to stand out from the crowd to create something compelling and memorable that is worth sharing”, said Fran Merlie, executive editor, GREGORY FCA. “Almost every speaker I‘ve heard has mentioned the possibilities of doing this. Andrew Davis has remixed a boring case study video like a reality TV editor and added curiosity and excitement. Ann Handley talked about how every email newsletter needs a sign – a sign that makes it clear that the newsletter is just for you. Jay Acunzo called on everyone to question conventional wisdom and best practice and find their own answers. It is still difficult to stand out, but if you focus on what makes your business unique and improve your voice, you can make it happen.”</p> <p>“What is interesting is that PR people have been satisfied designers from the start”, says Stacey Vaselaney, president of SLV Public Relations. “What has changed is the way people consume content today, and understanding this ever-changing landscape of consumption is critical to the effectiveness of my work. I particularly enjoyed hearing Andrew Davis talk about the ‘Curiosity Factor’ and its role in maintaining your audience’s attention.”</p> <p><strong>$$$$$</strong></p> <p>“I think the industry has been struggling with the difficulty of creating content for years, but this year I have noticed a change”, said Kristen Hicks, an Austin, Texas-based author and content marketer. “Creating great content is still important, but they have become so competitive that it does not make much sense to create them unless you have a promotion plan. A good promotional plan must focus on building relationships with people who can expand your reach and expand your content for a wider audience. It is not easy, but influencer marketing is the most effective and authentic strategy to promote your content that I know of.”</p> <p>“There was a talk that everyone will talk about for weeks and months. The ‘curiosity factor’ that questioned the notion that ‘snackable content’ is what every content consumer wants”, said LaDonna LaGuerre, Director of Content Marketing at Bright Horizons. “I wouldn‘t say that this was the case with long content, but it was absolutely a plea to the marketing specialists to create more excitement, more drama ... to work within the ‘Curiosity Gap’ to attract the attention of their audience. Andrew Davis presented an unintuitive approach to creating unforgettable, compelling content that people want to see, read and consume. Let us be honest: Isn’t that why we all came to Cleveland? This year’s motto “Take C.A.R.E.” (Curiosity-Action-Responsibility-Experience) was aimed at developing and managing change. A total of around 41,000 visitors and over 1,000 exhibitors from 40 countries came together and more than 550 speakers filled enormous 250 hours of inspiring lectures full of insights into best practice cases and innovations.</p> <p>The general expectations in reference to the jubilee conference were high. In advance, the new management board promised better orientation, stronger networking and more dialog (DMEXCO Journal Vol. 3).</p> <p>One of the reasons why we visited DMEXCO is because we wanted to get a live impression of the event in Cologne. Our visit provided us the opportunity to exchange ideas with our service providers, make interesting contacts and listen to a series of exciting lectures at the Congress Stage.</p> <p>Among the dominant topics at the conference were the changes in the world of employment caused by artificial intelligence (AI) and the influence of smart assistants on search behaviour and brand management. Besides, a first intermediate conclusion was drawn with regard to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).</p> <p>AI is the hype topic in the advertising industry in 2018. This topic was also very present at DMEXCO. According to the Expo slogan “Presenting the Future”, DMEXCO was able to offer exciting impulses with innovative technologies and digital topics such as AR, VR, AI or big data. The conference topics were clearly at the forefront of progress and offered sufficient starting points for in-depth discussions. The mix of an open concept and appropriate content leads to the fact that we enjoyed this year’s DMEXCO. The organizer has set the right course for a DMEXCO that promotes visitor orientation and communication. The exhibitors and lecturers, as well as the visitors themselves, have filled the space for communication with their dialog, which was possible due to the right choice of topics. All in all, DMEXCO did not only convince us with its concept, but also with its topics. Next year, we will very likely hit the road for Cologne again. Aside from the daily business, karting, ziplining, bowling, curling and archery provide the opportunity to get to know each other better, to start conversations and to simply broaden one’s own horizons. We decided to try something new, this time we attended a modern Kitchen Stadium in the St. Pauli quarter in Hamburg.</p> <p>Although the event location was previously known, answers to questions like “What are we cooking?” and also “Who is cooking what?” remained a well-kept secret of the organizers, which build the anticipation up to the time the event took place. When entering the Kitchen Stadium, many curious glances immediately wandered towards the kitchen counter, hoping to get some hints about the menu.</p> <p>From shiny red tomatoes, golden yellow potatoes, juicy lemons and limes, fresh ginger and rich and tender cuts of meat to shrimp: many ingredients were already available on the kitchen counter of the well-equipped professional kitchen. However, it was not clear at first glance, which dishes would be prepared during the evening. During a short welcome and introduction, we enjoyed a drink in a relaxing atmosphere hosted by our professional chefs. Afterward, they presented the menu of the evening, which took us to the Mediterranean kitchen.</p> <p><em>Appetizer: </em>Ceviche from the organic shrimp „Cara Royal“ with crispy corn bread and lime aioli</p> <p><em>Main course:</em> Secreto Iberico with date olive vinaigrette, Canarian potatoes and tomatoes</p> <p><em>Dessert:</em> Mallorcan almond tart with grilled pineapple and ice cream of Liquor 43</p> <p>Full of excitement for the delicious menu, we divided ourselves among the different cooking stations. As such, we had inadvertently created separate teams for appetizer, main course, and dessert. Everyone had the chance to contribute to the menu at their own pace. We were also able to switch from one station to another, allowing us to share conversations and experiences across the various stations.</p> <p><strong>$$$$$</strong></p> <p>Ultimately, our mission was to cut several kilos of crisp vegetables and to cut out the sinews of the meat. The two professional chefs guided us through the evening, explaining to us in detail their professional methods, answering questions, and gaving us interesting tips and tricks on all aspects of cooking. The meat was seared while the ventilation system did some hard work. Also the preparations for the homemade dessert quickly ran at full speed, whereupon a delicious smell spread through the event kitchen. Our hosts also included some plant-based substitutions for the vegetarians among us. Our appetites continued to grow as the cooking progressed. Once the meal-prep was completed, the dishes were plated by the fitting team. Overall, for every taste there was a personal highlight.</p> <p>Once we moved away from the pots and pans, we had many great conversations during dinner and into the late evening. The basis of these innovations is artificial intelligence (AI). AI will also shape everyday work in the future. Banks and insurance companies optimize their customer communication by using AI. However, AI is not only relieving people in their jobs, it has the potential to replace entire jobs with progressive improvement. In May 2018, Google introduced its AI Duplex on a developer conference. With Duplex, <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/google-duplex-auf-der-i-o-gruselig-gute-kuenstliche-intelligenz-a-1206938.html" target="„_blank&quot;">Google aims to enable a real dialogue between humans and computers</a>, with natural irregularities in speaking. Questions to which many companies, including Google, <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/google-duplex-auf-der-i-o-gruselig-gute-kuenstliche-intelligenz-a-1206938.html" target="„_blank&quot;">have not found a satisfactory answer yet</a>.   </p> <p><strong>Starting points for artificial intelligence in Publishing</strong></p> <p>Zalando publicly announced the plan to replace 250 marketing specialists with AI in March 2018. Consequently, a discussion about the <a href="https://www.horizont.net/tech/nachrichten/Kuenstliche-Intelligenz-Oliver-Samwer-prophezeit-digitalen-Kahlschlag-im-Marketing-167508" target="„_blank&quot;">future of advertising professionals</a> arised. This development creates the impression that automation by AI could replace jobs across all levels of education with advancing technology. Some advertising experts even believe that AI brings new opportunities. Marketing conditions are made easier and expert knowledge is still required to implement technologies properly and come to helpful strategic conclusions (W&amp;V no. 29). But how does it look for publishers in concrete terms? For example, which options do corporations, publishers and agencies have when it comes to using AI-requiring technologies? David Rheault has the point of view that <a href="http://www.inpublishing.co.uk/kb/articles/content_management_5_minutes_with_david_rheault_1951.aspx" target="„_blank&quot;">publishers need to consider AI and machine learning</a> in the next couple years. In fact, some publishers are using AI technology to leverage image tagging and content analysis, though the use of AI can often be expanded. Technologies such as “Nomotekt” are already able to <a href="https://www.boersenblatt.net/bookbytes/artikel-kuenstliche_intelligenz_____der_versuch_einer_aktuellen_einsortierung_der_moeglichkeiten_fuer_verlage_und_buchhandel.1363770.html" target="„_blank&quot;">imitate the specific characteristics of editors</a>. Publishers should also make greater use of appropriate analysis tools to address content to specific target groups because the motivation to pay for online content (paywall) might significantly increase.</p> <p><strong>The future of artificial intelligence</strong></p> <p>What about the development of AI in the next coming years? Companies will probably enhance the use of AI technologies. Large corporations such as Bosch, Daimler and SAP are currently investing heavily in AI in order to enable automated driving, get more out of individual employees and optimize customer experiences. <a href="https://www.marketing-boerse.de/News/details/1828-Unternehmen-setzen-im-Marketing-auf-Kuenstliche-Intelligenz/147455" target="„_blank&quot;">Data quality provides the basis for the use of AI </a>and is a decisive criterion whether AI can deliver additional value. Monotonous work can often be performed much faster by AI.
